CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Jess Foster was not a field agent.

Technically speaking, that's exactly what she was. All Secret Service Special Agents received the same training and certifications. She particularly enjoyed the physical aspect of her training, and in a fistfight or even a firefight, she had no doubt she could handle herself well.

But she wasn’t comfortable being in the middle of the action. That was Jake’s arena. Jake was a former Marine, and he exemplified the adage that there was no such thing as a “former” Marine. Jess would never say this to Jake, especially not now that he and Sheila were fighting, but the happiest Jess had ever seen him—with the exception of the birth of his son—was when he was in the middle of a fight for his life. Bonus points if the fight was also for someone else’s life.

Jess wasn’t like that. Her forte was technology. She was the wizard who could crack into any system, encrypt any code, defeat any EM suite and overcome any obstacle in the way of obtaining any information she needed and providing it to whoever needed it. She liked working from the comfort of her office, more specifically the comfort of one of the most powerful arrays of computing and monitoring in the Western Hemisphere. Out there, she was a small and vulnerable creature surrounded by things that wanted to hurt her. In here, she was as close to godhood as anyone would ever get.

But right now, she wanted nothing more than to fly right to the middle of the firefight, to wherever those drones were right now, and take them apart with her bare hands.

“They’re dark again,” she said into her earpiece. “Last heading seven degrees north of due west.”

“But we know they won’t keep that heading,” Munoz replied. “Damn it! They resisted the invasive code?”

Jess had tried to introduce an invasive code to the drones’ AI to force it to fail and shut down so Jess could take control of the drones from her office, but the drones’ firewall had identified the invasive code and simply ignored the incoming transmission. Jess’s attempts to force them to “listen” had ended in similar failure.

“Yes. They just ignored it, and when I tried to fill the air with white noise, they just cut off radio entirely.”

“Cut off radio? They can do that?”

“Apparently.”

“What about satellite?”

“I’m trying that now, but their GPS is turned off too.”

“How can they do that? How can they navigate without GPS or radio? Laser?”

“Only if their destination is line of sight. I’m thinking they have magnetic compasses as backup systems.”

“Right. That makes sense. Damn it!”

Jess sympathized with Munoz’s anger. The CAT leader had no way of preventing the attack on the motorcade since he wasn’t there when it happened, but that didn’t prevent him from blaming himself personally. He was a lot like Jake in that way.

Jake. Jess hoped and prayed he was still alive, but—

“Do you have eyes on the President? Or Mercer?”

Jess took a deep breath to help her voice remain steady.
